Visiting trade fairs is an essential part of our business, it's where we keep up to date with developments in the trade and meet new designers and catch up with old friends. Believe it or not it is actually quite hard work attending seminars, watching fashion shows and looking at gorgeous jewellery!
So it's really nice when you can combine this with a relaxing stay in a nice hotel. We drove from Bo'ness to Lancaster where we stayed overnight in a fabulous restored mill on the canal. The Mill at Conder Green. The rooms were spacious and comfortable with views along the canal, the service and the food was excellent. In fact we enjoyed it so much that we booked another night to break up the return journey.
It was only a couple of hours drive from there to Birmingham NEC and the madness that is Spring Fair. So we arrived around lunchtime and spent the afternoon admiring some amazing jewellery, searching out new handbag suppliers and enjoying the fashion show before heading off to a country house hotel near Coventry.
I won't go into detail but this hotel unfortunalely did not live up to expectations (tiny room, champagne that had been ordered not in the room, restaurant in another building - I could go on...)
Our second day at Spring Fair was spent placing orders. The two jewellery designers that stood out for us were Jessica Flinn who makes beautiful lace etched cuffs, necklaces and earrings, and Tatty Devine's quirky perspex necklaces and brooches.
Then it was time to hit the road again. We spent another enjoyable night at The Mill at Conder Green before heading back home. All in all it was a very successful trip - exciting new stock for the shop, good food and wine and ONE nice hotel.
When's the next Trade Fair?
Ok guys I am going to share with you what I think are the best bits of the Pebbles sale! I love a good sale and nothing cheers me up more in January than a good hunt round to sniff out the bargains.
My first pick has to be this Get Real necklace from Bjorg. It was selling for £200 and now it is only £95! Now that is what I call a bargain!
My second pick is Zelia Horsley's Dirty Harry bracelet. This was £135 and now is only £85! I love the chunkiness and simplicity of this bracelet.
Next I have chosen the Eliza bag from designer Steven Harkin. This bag screams style and sophistication and also has a fun element. Was £390 and in the sale is now only £292.50!
My last choice from the Pebbles sale is this cheeky silver bangle. Inscribed 'Apudne te vel me? (your place or mine?) this silver bangle is a talking piece of jewellery. This certainly is a bargain as it was selling for £220 and is now only £95! That's a massive saving of £115!!!!!
There are many more massive savings to be found online and in our Edinburgh and Bo'ness stores so happy bargain hunting!
After seeing a picture of Rihanna wearing the gorgeous Bjorg Spine bangle at Nivea's 100th anniversary bash, I got to thinking, do celebs influence our style when it comes to jewellery?
It is a well known fact that celebrities such as Dannii Minogue, Fern Cotton, Cherly Cole and even the newly wed Dutchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton) have a huge impact on what we wear. Sales of sapphire engagement rings more than tripled after Wills and Kate announced their engagement and the dress Kate wore for thier engagement pictures sold out quickly.
But when it comes to jewellery do we like to wear the same jewellery as our favourite celebrities or do we like to take a little of thier style and add our own finishing touches? When Katy Perry was announced as ambassador for Thomas Sabo were you reaching for your purse to buy the newest piece?
Here we have Sheridan Smith with her Steven Harkin 'Kylie' clutch bag which was named after the one and only Kylie Minogue who owns the bag in red patent. Do you think Sheridan bought it because of it's celebrity status?
Personally I like to choose my jewellery and accessories because I love the feel, finish or designer. It may be in the same style as one of the big style icons has worn but not the exact piece. Therefore I can add my own twist and match several pieces from different ranges and/or designers together.
For example I love to wear my Sphere Of Life charm bracelet everyday, sometimes teamed with a Sphere Of Life necklace, sometimes with a Tina Lilienthal (who is loved by loads of celebs including Davina McCall!) cherry necklace or if I am heading out I will dress it up with a bit of sparkle!
I love to check out the magazines to see the latest style do's and don'ts but when it comes to choosing what I wear I love to be individual. I may have some pieces that are also owned by celebs but I have chosen them beacuase I love them for their design not because of who I have seen wearing them!
When it comes to leather handbags I simply love handmade unique bags that make a style statement. The smell of leather, the colours and styles. When we get a delivery from one of our handbag designers and each of the bags are wrapped individually I am like a kid at Xmas time, ripping at the paper to see what is inside!
When Coco Barclay Skirt bagsfirst arrived in our Bo'ness shop, I just had to have the Clutch My Skirt in fucshia and bought it before it even reached the shelves! I love the colour and style of the bag and I get loads of compliments on it when ever I use it. It has been to weddings, parties and even to the pub! My favourite designer leather handbag goes with anything and is great to add a splash of colour.
Coco Barclay works in the highest quality, ethically sourced materials and her designs are fun, stylish and practical too. Coco has brought together a group of British craftspeople to produce her designs, people who do what they do because they love it - and it shows.
One designer leather handbag I would love to own (but need to save some pennies first!) would be the Ameliafrom Steven Harkin. I love the structure of this handmade bag and it would look fantatsic dressed with jeans (or my new maxi dress!) for a day out with the girls.
Steven Harkin has been an artist, designer, maker and producer of leather accessories for some 25 years. He has gained international recognition for his creative style and his handbags are loved by public and private collectors. The Kylie clutch bag was named after Kylie Minogue who owns it in red patent leather.
I love the soft suede inside this bag and the selection of colours you can choose from, you could have one to match every outfit!
A leather handbag is one of the most important (and useful) accessories you own, so why not make a statement with yours?
