  • Bex Bardon - Best Of British Designers Interview

As part of our Best Of British Designers celebration I got the opportunity to interview our wonderful British jewellery designers.

Today our featured British designer is Bex Bardon -

    Bex Bardon is a self-confessed jewellery-aholic!

"I once read somewhere about the body being a blank canvas, that's just how I had  always seen myself- a canvas to be adorned. I've always been interested in  adornment in every form. I love jewellery and clothing to more extreme permanent  expressions in tattoos and piercings. People are absolutely fascinating in the  way that they choose to express themselves by what they are wearing. I find  gothic and punk fashion especially liberating, it's fun, exciting and sexy in  different ways. My jewellery range at the moment shows this, it's chunky  statement jewellery."

Bex is based in West Yorkshire and runs her business from her workshop there.

Why did you decide to work in jewellery design?

'I decided I wanted to be a jewellery designer/maker when I was quite young, this is all I ever imagined doing and it's all I ever want to do!  I have such freedom, its so exciting to make whatever I want to.'

What was the first piece of jewellery you made?

'I went through a phase of making brooches when I was little!  The first serious jewellery I made was wedding jewellery for a friend.'

    What is your biggest inspiration?

'The thing that inspires me most is punk fashion.'

Who do you admire most in the jewellery industry?

'This is a really tough one because there are so many amazing jewellers, its hard to narrow it down!  I love Marta Mattsson's work, its so quirky and unusual and a bit gross!'

and finally which celebrity (past or present) would you love to see wearing one of your designs?

'It has to be Siouxsie from Siouxsie and the Banshees.  I can really imagine her in my work, it would be amazing if she modelled my work......... maybe some day!'

  • Jessica Flinn - Best Of British Designers Interview

As part of our Best Of British Designers celebration I got the opportunity to interview our wonderful British jewellery designers.

Today our featured British designer is Sheffield based Jessica Flinn -

Jessica's passion for jewellery started in 2007 when she applied to university. She wanted to combine her love of art with learning a practical 'hands on' skill.  In January 2009 she took part in an educational exchange to Seoul, South Korea - an experience that influences her designs.  After specialising in Silver in her final year of university she went on the set up her own company Jessica Flinn Designs in May 2010.

Every single piece from her collections has been designed in Sheffield, manufactured on site and using local businesses; and is always hand finished.

Why did you decide to work in jewellery design?

'I wanted to combine my love of art with a physical skill - jewellery seemed like the best mix of the two.'

What was the first piece of jewellery you made?

'I made a brooch at university, it was a little car which I lost wax cast.  I thought it was brilliant; my lecturers on the other hand couldn't see how it was connected to our "buildings architecture" as the breif stated - oops!'

    What is your biggest inspiration?

'My friends, family and partner Ollie - sounds cheesey but at the end of the day it's all for them!'

Who do you admire most in the jewellery industry?

'I admire successful jewellery designers.  I hope to be like them one day!  I admire designers such as Babette Wasserman - a keen eye and a business head!'

and finally which celebrity (past or present) would you love to see wearing one of your designs?

'I'm a royal family fan - anything British is great by me so ideally it would be Kate Middleton (Duchess of Cambridge).  I like her so much I even designed a range of stainless steel cuffs in dedication to her!'

For today only you can get your hands on your own piece of Jessica Flinn jewellery with 15% off!  Simply enter JESS15 at the checkout for your discount to be applied.

  • Danielle's pick of jewellery from the Oscars 2012

While fashion magazines are going wild for who wore what designer dress and who looked best on the red carpet at the Oscars last night, there is just one thing that catches my eye and that is the jewellery!

As usual the A list celebrities didn't disappoint on that front and so I thought I would share with you some of my favourite pieces from the film awards.

Just as the fashion mags are all alight with Gwyneth Paltrow's stunning Tom Ford dress it was what she was adorning her arm with that caught my eye.  A one off Hearts Of Fire cuff set with 2368 rose cut diamonds from Anna Hu.

Diamonds were of course the stone of choice for most of the celebrities attending the Oscars 2012 and therefore it is not a surprise that all of my picks have diamonds and mostly set into Platinum.

Natalie Portman's Platinum and diamond necklace caught my attention for it's simplicity and elegance and paired with gorgeous diamond earrings, she looked fantastic.

Beautiful and stylish as ever Cameron Diaz rocked the statement ring look.  I am a big fan of large rings being stacked and Cameron does this wonderfully with a platinum round cut diamond Dome ring from Tiffany & Co.

Emma Stone also rocked the chunky statement jewellery trend with this stunning bracelet from Louis Vitton.

Finishing off my picks from the Oscars 2012 is Ms Jennifer Lopez wearing simple yet stunning platinum and diamond earrings from Lorraine Schwartz.  Perhaps an unusual choice for me as I am usually all about big bold contemporary jewellery but I simply love the simplicity of these gorgeous earrings.

  • Feel it! Say it! Show it!

As if you needed any reminding, Valentines Day is only a week away, so are you ready or are you still searching for the perfect gift for the special person in your life?

Show your love this Valentines with a gift that will last much much longer than flowers or chocolates (especially in my house!).

Here are a few of my favourites from our Valentines gift guide -

This red shamballa bracelet has everything!  Sparkles, fashionable, affordable and most of all it is red, the colour of love!

Sphere Of Life necklaces are an amazing Valentines gift as you can choose the sentiment or message you would like to send.  One of my absolute favourites of this range (because I am a bit of an old romantic) is Message In A Sphere - I Love You.  We also have 20% off all of our Sphere Of Life necklaces up until Valentines Day!

Not really a hearts and flowers kind of person? Then how about this for a twist on the traditional heart necklace from Norwegian designer Bjorg?  This is a way of truly giving your heart to the one you love!

Of course we haven't forgotten about all the men out there that like a bit of bling too!  These gorgeous crystal heart and arrow cufflinks will brighten up his day and of course he will think you every time he sees them!

However you choose to spend you Valentines Day this year, be it out for a special meal or curled up with the one you love watching a film (mine will be at work and then at zumba!) I hope you have a fantastic day!

  • Danielle's pick of the Pebbles Sale

Ok guys I am going to share with you what I think are the best bits of the Pebbles sale!  I love a good sale and nothing cheers me up more in January than a good hunt round to sniff out the bargains.

My first pick has to be this Get Real necklace from Bjorg.  It was selling for £200 and now it is only £95!  Now that is what I call a bargain!

My second pick is Zelia Horsley's Dirty Harry bracelet.  This was £135 and now is only £85!  I love the chunkiness and simplicity of this bracelet.

Next I have chosen the Eliza bag from designer Steven Harkin.  This bag screams style and sophistication and also has a fun element.  Was £390 and in the sale is now only £292.50!

My last choice from the Pebbles sale is this cheeky silver bangle.  Inscribed 'Apudne te vel me? (your place or mine?) this silver bangle is a talking piece of jewellery.  This certainly is a bargain as it was selling for £220 and is now only £95!  That's a massive saving of £115!!!!!

There are many more massive savings to be found online and in our Edinburgh and Bo'ness stores so happy bargain hunting!

  • Pebbles says G'day mate to Hardware Mens Jewellery

Many years ago the choice of mens jewellery was pretty limited and all you could find was a watch or some silver cufflinks!  Happily this is no longer the case and more and more men are choosing to experiement with jewellery and personally I think this is a good thing!

Mens jewellery has came on leaps and bounds and I simply love this new range of Hardware stainless steel jewellery all the way from Down Under!  It is simple and stylish, hardwearing and unusual, but most of all very very wearable.

From stunning rubber bracelets with rose gold finished stainless steel, black leather necklaces with stainless steel beads to unusual shaped stainless steel and rubber cufflinks, Hardware brings you effortless style and as the name suggests hardwearing jewellery.

Whether you like to give a subtle nod to fashion or you like to make a statement with what you wear, there will be a piece in this collection that is perfect to suit your style!

  • Looking for ideas for Christmas gifts?

The reminders that Christmas will soon be upon us are everywhere. We are dusting down the decorations and preparing to Chrismassify (?) our shops.

We have lots of new stock ready to tempt customers - I'm always surprised by how many people come in looking for Christmas gifts and end up treating themselves as well!

Very popular so far are the Shamballa bracelets - lots of customers are telling me that they've seen them at much higher prices elsewhere, so they are buying more than one. I like their thinking "One for a gift and one for me."shamballa braceletAlso going down very well are the new pieces form Bjorg's Odyssey range, particularly the Winged ring as worn by Jessie J in her Price Tag video. The Spine collection has also been worn by Rhianna, Jessie J and most recently Kelly Rowland on The X Factor, and is proving popular with both guys and girls.

We're also loving the Gales of Passion collection from Ostrowski. Statement jewellery with Swarovski elements. There are pendants, earrings, bracelets and rings - GORGEOUS.

So as the time for mulled wine and mince pies is fast approaching, and we all get into gift buying mode, have a look at our Gift Guide where you're sure to find something to bring a smile to someones face - and why not treat yourself while your at it?

  • Keep Calm and Dont Lose Your Head

This week Pebbles took delivery of gorgeous Elkin 'Don't Lose Your Head' bracelets and I fell in love with them the minute I opened the package from designer Eliisa Makin.

Darkly humorous new jewellery label Elkin is already a favourite among Fashion Editors, Models and Musicians. Launched at the beginning of the year by Eliisa Makin, a London based Fashion Stylist, the dangerously addictive bracelets are handmade and designed for both men and women.

Eliisa is a Masters graduate of the Courtauld Institute of Art, with an eight year career styling for The Independent, The Observer, Guardian and many magazines. Elkin was born after Eliisa created some bracelets in a break between pictures on a fashion shoot.  She immediately had to make several more for the fashion team, and has been keeping up with the spiralling demand ever since. The bracelets have been featured by Elle, The Times, Grazia, The Evening Standard among many other publications and future collections inspired by Surrealism, bad rock and pop-culture are now in the pipeline.

These gorgeously gothic bracelets can be found in both our Bo'ness and Edinburgh stores and are also available online.

Oh and Santa if you are reading this and looking for inspiration, pop one in my stocking (my favourite is the blue one!) because I have been a good girl this year!
