  • Bex Bardon - Best Of British Designers Interview

As part of our Best Of British Designers celebration I got the opportunity to interview our wonderful British jewellery designers.

Today our featured British designer is Bex Bardon -

    Bex Bardon is a self-confessed jewellery-aholic!

"I once read somewhere about the body being a blank canvas, that's just how I had  always seen myself- a canvas to be adorned. I've always been interested in  adornment in every form. I love jewellery and clothing to more extreme permanent  expressions in tattoos and piercings. People are absolutely fascinating in the  way that they choose to express themselves by what they are wearing. I find  gothic and punk fashion especially liberating, it's fun, exciting and sexy in  different ways. My jewellery range at the moment shows this, it's chunky  statement jewellery."

Bex is based in West Yorkshire and runs her business from her workshop there.

Why did you decide to work in jewellery design?

'I decided I wanted to be a jewellery designer/maker when I was quite young, this is all I ever imagined doing and it's all I ever want to do!  I have such freedom, its so exciting to make whatever I want to.'

What was the first piece of jewellery you made?

'I went through a phase of making brooches when I was little!  The first serious jewellery I made was wedding jewellery for a friend.'

    What is your biggest inspiration?

'The thing that inspires me most is punk fashion.'

Who do you admire most in the jewellery industry?

'This is a really tough one because there are so many amazing jewellers, its hard to narrow it down!  I love Marta Mattsson's work, its so quirky and unusual and a bit gross!'

and finally which celebrity (past or present) would you love to see wearing one of your designs?

'It has to be Siouxsie from Siouxsie and the Banshees.  I can really imagine her in my work, it would be amazing if she modelled my work......... maybe some day!'

For today only you can get your hands on your own piece of Bex Bardon jewellery with 15% off! Simply enter BEX15 at the checkout for your discount to be applied.

  • Kim Mitchell - Best Of British Designers Interview

As part of our Best Of British Designers celebration I got the opportunity to interview our wonderful British jewellery designers.

Today our featured British designer is Edinburgh based Kim Mitchell -

Kim graduated in 2010 from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design with an Honours Degree in Jewellery and Metal Design. Since then she has been working in her home city of Edinburgh, creating hand crafted sterling silver jewellery using a variety of both traditional and modern silversmithing techniques.

Why did you decide to work in jewellery design?

'At university I discovered how much I love working in 3D - and with metal.  I love designing and making something that people can have fun with and will last forever.'

What was the first piece of jewellery you made?

'My first piece of jewellery was a large round silver and brass brooch which I gave to my Granny as a gift.  We were asked to use a mixture of materials so I set a piece of green sea glass next to a silver flower silhouette.  It's a similar theme to the work I do now so its interesting to look back and see how your style develops.'

    What is your biggest inspiration?

'My work is mainly influenced by nature, in particular flowers and trees.  I am inspired by the shadows thrown by their shapes and try to capture this in metal.'

Who do you admire most in the jewellery industry?

'I love Italian goldsmith Giovanni Corvaja.  His work is absolutely stunning and really challenges what is believed possible in goldsmithing techniques.  I also love going to see the Degree Shows and am always amazed by the work of new British designers.'

and finally, which celebrity (past or present) would you love to see wearing one of your designs?

'I would love to see my designs on the red carpet, on someone like Sienna Miller or Emma Watson and of course Kate Middleton.  It would be even better if it was a special gift from Will!'

For today only you can get your hands on your own piece of Kim Mitchell jewellery with 15% off!  Simply enter KIM15 at the checkout for your discount to be applied.

  • Pebbles welcomes Jessica Flinn Designs

Ever since Val and Kevin came back from Spring Fair last month and showed me Jessica Flinn Designs I have been egarly awaiting the arrival of her contemporary lace etched stainless steel cuffs, neckaces and earrings.  When the box arrived a few days ago with Jessica's jewellery in it I certainly wasn't disappointed!

The stunning lace patterns used in Jessica's jewellery are sourced from around the UK and Europe.  One of the lace designs is the same type of lace that was on Kate Middleton's wedding dress; the now Dutchess of Cambridge.  Jessica's favourite is a type of lace from the Mediterranen island of Crete; dubbed the pineapple lace because of its distinctive forms (pictured above).

This gorgeous collar is a brilliant example of how Jessica has taken the primary export of her hometown of Sheffield  (stainless steel) and turned the industrial connotations on their head.  By creating a unique and eye catching range of delicate, feminine jewellery.

One of the pieces from Jessica that is on my wishlist (hint hint I have a birthday coming soon!) is the Vintage Lace Mid Cuff which has been decorated with an original 1920's handmade piece of lace.

Jessica Flinn Designs are all now available in Edinburgh, Bo'ness and online.
