  • Pebbles move to larger premises in Bo'ness

This is a transcript of a feature in the Bo'ness Journal & Gazette on Friday 26th April 2013, reporting on Pebbles move to larger premises in Bo'ness. (Words by Esther Hutcheson, images by Gordon McBrearty)

    A 24-carat gem of a jeweller's shop

Pebbles' passion for jewellery sparkles as brightly as the diamonds it sells and this family run Bo'ness firm's new premises are almost four times larger that previously, allowing it to showcase even more unique, high quality designs.

Expectations are not just met, but exceeded, by husband and wife Val and Kevin Trotter, and daughter Danielle who offer the highest level of expertise and customer care at their centrally located shop at 43 North Street.

They aim to be the wedding ring specialists for the West Lothian and Falkirk area, offering what they believe to be the widest choice in the region.

Couples have a comfortable consultation area in which to discuss their wishes, with the ever popular in-house bespoke design service available.

Pebbles opened in Bo'ness in 2005 before expanding into Edinburgh and has twice been voted by customers and industry peers as an "Inspiring Independent Jewellers" (2011 and 1012).

It has also been named as a "Retail Star" by a trade magazine.

Pebbles' impressive contemporary stock range boasts rings, neck and wrist wear, earrings and accessories, including French, Swiss, Italian, German and British designers.

Customers will find unusual, eyecatching pieces attractively displayed, many exclusive to Pebbles, which also prides itself on supporting emerging and new talent.

While items of jewellery can cost hundreds or thousands of pounds, at Pebbles fashion pieces start from £15 and silver jewellery from £20, ensuring there is something to suit every budget.

And a very gnerous loyalty points system has just been launched, giving one point for every £20 spent. Reach 10 points and there is 10 per cent off your next purchase.

Val, Kevin and Danielle are all trained in jewellery and have a combined 50 plus years experience, so customers can be assured they are in safe hands.

Should you have a special idea for your own unique piece of jewellery, the Pebbles team will work with you to bring it to friution.

The team's opinion is well regarded within the jewellery world, so much so, they have sat on judging panels and been invited to speak at trade shows.

On what makes their business stand out from the crowd, Val says: "I think the product offering is different - it's unusual, not what you can find everywhere. Lots of our designs are exclusive and we like to surpirse people with what we have.

"Quality we insist on, and in terms of expertise, we know what we are talking about.

"We get to know the designers, to know the back story to a piece of jewellery.

"As for customer service, it's about going that extra mile.

"At Pebbles it's the whole package that sets us apart, including how to look after your purchases."

The new North Street shop sells and fits replacement watch batteries and the team can arrange for repairs and valuations to be carried out.

And if you have pieces of family jewellery tucked away that you would love to wear but they are the wrong size, or you wnat them incorporated into a different piece, a remodelling servie is available.

Testament to its sucess, the growing family firm which started in Bo'ness and has kept its main branch in the towm now has customers from all over the UK and beyond.

They, and new shoppers, can keep updated on a daily basis by following Pebbles on Facebook and Twitter, via email bulletins and byy visiting its website at There you can find details of the new online loyalty scheme.

  • Bex Bardon - Best Of British Designers Interview

As part of our Best Of British Designers celebration I got the opportunity to interview our wonderful British jewellery designers.

Today our featured British designer is Bex Bardon -

    Bex Bardon is a self-confessed jewellery-aholic!

"I once read somewhere about the body being a blank canvas, that's just how I had  always seen myself- a canvas to be adorned. I've always been interested in  adornment in every form. I love jewellery and clothing to more extreme permanent  expressions in tattoos and piercings. People are absolutely fascinating in the  way that they choose to express themselves by what they are wearing. I find  gothic and punk fashion especially liberating, it's fun, exciting and sexy in  different ways. My jewellery range at the moment shows this, it's chunky  statement jewellery."

Bex is based in West Yorkshire and runs her business from her workshop there.

Why did you decide to work in jewellery design?

'I decided I wanted to be a jewellery designer/maker when I was quite young, this is all I ever imagined doing and it's all I ever want to do!  I have such freedom, its so exciting to make whatever I want to.'

What was the first piece of jewellery you made?

'I went through a phase of making brooches when I was little!  The first serious jewellery I made was wedding jewellery for a friend.'

    What is your biggest inspiration?

'The thing that inspires me most is punk fashion.'

Who do you admire most in the jewellery industry?

'This is a really tough one because there are so many amazing jewellers, its hard to narrow it down!  I love Marta Mattsson's work, its so quirky and unusual and a bit gross!'

and finally which celebrity (past or present) would you love to see wearing one of your designs?

'It has to be Siouxsie from Siouxsie and the Banshees.  I can really imagine her in my work, it would be amazing if she modelled my work......... maybe some day!'

For today only you can get your hands on your own piece of Bex Bardon jewellery with 15% off! Simply enter BEX15 at the checkout for your discount to be applied.

  • Jessica Flinn - Best Of British Designers Interview

As part of our Best Of British Designers celebration I got the opportunity to interview our wonderful British jewellery designers.

Today our featured British designer is Sheffield based Jessica Flinn -

Jessica's passion for jewellery started in 2007 when she applied to university. She wanted to combine her love of art with learning a practical 'hands on' skill.  In January 2009 she took part in an educational exchange to Seoul, South Korea - an experience that influences her designs.  After specialising in Silver in her final year of university she went on the set up her own company Jessica Flinn Designs in May 2010.

Every single piece from her collections has been designed in Sheffield, manufactured on site and using local businesses; and is always hand finished.

Why did you decide to work in jewellery design?

'I wanted to combine my love of art with a physical skill - jewellery seemed like the best mix of the two.'

What was the first piece of jewellery you made?

'I made a brooch at university, it was a little car which I lost wax cast.  I thought it was brilliant; my lecturers on the other hand couldn't see how it was connected to our "buildings architecture" as the breif stated - oops!'

    What is your biggest inspiration?

'My friends, family and partner Ollie - sounds cheesey but at the end of the day it's all for them!'

Who do you admire most in the jewellery industry?

'I admire successful jewellery designers.  I hope to be like them one day!  I admire designers such as Babette Wasserman - a keen eye and a business head!'

and finally which celebrity (past or present) would you love to see wearing one of your designs?

'I'm a royal family fan - anything British is great by me so ideally it would be Kate Middleton (Duchess of Cambridge).  I like her so much I even designed a range of stainless steel cuffs in dedication to her!'

For today only you can get your hands on your own piece of Jessica Flinn jewellery with 15% off!  Simply enter JESS15 at the checkout for your discount to be applied.
