WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHITE GOLD AND PLATINUM? Print E-mail

Platinum is a naturally occuring white metal and so does not need to be rhodium plated - unlike white gold.

Platinum hallmarked in Britain is usually 95% pure (as opposed to 37.5% in 9 carat gold and 75%in 18 carat gold) so is extremely unlikely to cause any allergic reaction

Because of its limited availablity (it is 35 times rarer than gold), platinum has a very special value.

Platinum is one of the strongest and densest precious metals, so it can be worn with confidence, it requires very little maintenance and is an ideal metal for holding stones securely in place.

In other words platinum is

PURE - RARE- ETERNAL

the perfect metal to celebrate the perfect love.

White gold on the other hand, is a mixture of yellow gold and white metals which is then ususally coated to with rhodium to give a bright shiny finish. This rhodium coating can wear off but can easily be re-applied.

A good way of understanding how we get white gold is to imagine a pot of yellow paint (yellow gold) and if we keep adding white  paint (white metal alloys) to it, it will never become pure white but it will loose it's bright yellow appearance. This is the basis for white gold which when rhodium platered gives us the bright white finish that we recognise as white gold.

As most of our rings are available in either platinum, white gold or yellow gold you can choose the material which best suits your lifestyle and budget.
