It is the sulphur in the atmosphere that reacts with siver causing it to turn a nasty black colour.

Other substances that can "turn" silver are perfumes, hairsprays, body lotion and chlorine, so as with all jewellery, we recomment that you avoid using these whilst wearing your silver jewellery.
